Affordances

The term affordance refers to the perceived and actual properties of the thing, primarily those fundamental properties that determine just how the thing could possibly be used. A chair affords (‘is for’) support and, therefore, affords sitting. A chair can also be carried. (Norman, 1988, p. 9)

In my opinion Donald Norman’s definition above resonates more with me as he stresses

“real affordances are not nearly as important as perceived affordances. It is perceived affordances that determine the actions that can be performed and signal to the user how they may be accomplished (Norman, 1988).”

In using technology sometimes you have to think in this manner as sometimes it may be used in a way that has never been thought of before. Furthermore, technologies nowaday can change from week to week in enhancing its abilities through updates and user request.  One technology that I am deeply interested in, is using Google Classroom for blended learning. Since I started using it, the constant request form the user community has changed its affordances according to the user needs. Amazing! It can allow me to move some of the work online, and afford me more time to tackle the more difficult concepts in the classroom.
